Let's Play

Let’s Play, is part of an effort to claim and defend play as a right, but also as an archive of strategies of renaming the self, constructing friendship and family, and transmitting language as both a carrier of meanings and a repository of physical (rhythmic) and psychic objects.

At the heart of Let’s Play is a database allowing for the collection and analysis of games played in the Caribbean over the 20th and 21st centuries. It will provide participants with interactive recipes, outlining game rules and play patters, while inviting those with memories of these games or those playing for the first time to comment on their experiences. However, instead of privileging the archive as a place of nostalgia for extinct or endangered games that ‘we used to play’, Let’s Play seeks to engage in conversations about the genealogy of Caribbean play culture as well as Caribbean ideas around the design of games. We expect to generate new insight into the combination of mechanics, dynamics and aesthetics that characterize games created or adapted within the region.
